Understanding The Definition Of Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a persistent but a non-contagious skin disease. Causes of psoriasis are not known. Patients may exhibit
no visible symptoms on their skin whereas some may develop a red flaking skin. This red flaking skin is called psoriatic plaque. The area
where the skin is inflamed and where there is extreme skin production is actually psoriatic plaque. Skin usually gathers in these patches
and becomes silver in color. Plaques are usually found on the knees, elbows and any part of the body such as the genitals, soles, palms,
scalp and joints.
Psoriasis is a long-lasting and a chronic skin disease. The effect of Psoriasis can be different from individual to individual. Psoriasis
affects the nails causing psoriatic nail dystrophy. The body may experience the swelling of joints because of psoriasis causing psoriatic
arthritis. Of all the people suffering from psoriasis, 10 to 15 percent of them have psoriatic arthritis.
Psoriasis is more common to people with dry skin than those with a moisturized or oily skin. Psoriasis can appear on a scratchy skin post like
areas with scratches and cuts. This is known as the Koebner phenomenon. Dry skin is the effect of having been deprived of the oil that guards any
infections from harming the skin. Because of this, individuals who have dry skins are more susceptible to psoriasis as the infecting bacteria
easily grows on dry skin conditions.
Psoriasis is not the same as athlete's foot. Psoriasis is caused by dry skin conditions while athlete's foot is a fungal infection that
develops due to wet skin conditions. Unlike eczema it is generally found on the outer surface of the joints. In Psoriasis the infectious microbe
causes swelling, rashes and scratchy skin. This causes the skin to dry even further as the microbe takes in the moisture of the skin leaving it
drier than before.
If you wish to prevent psoriasis you should avoid the usage of shower scrubs. Scratches and the loss of natural skin oils are caused by the
use of shower scrubs. After taking a bath you can use talcum powder. Fungal infection can be avoided because talc soaks up extra moisture on
skin. Moisturizers are also helpful to keep the skin moist and stimulate the functioning of the oil glands, thereby keeping the skin moist and
infections at bay.
Psoriasis can be clearly defined, but its causes are not. The cause may be from a previous injury or hereditary. Factors like withdrawal of
systemic corticosteroid, stress, smoking, extreme alcohol consumption may worsen psoriasis. In spite of a number of medications available
psoriasis is extremely difficult to eradicate due to its persistent appearance.
