The Newest Gout Remedy

As a gout sufferer, it is not a far-fetched idea that a remedy for gout would be discovered.  For the first time ever since the 1960s, a brand new gout treatment is available.  Febuxostat is offered under the brand name Uloric in the U.S.A. and Adenuric in European countries.  This new gout treatment was approved by the Food and Drug Administration since February 2009.

A conventional gout treatment is involved on either on dealing with the pain related to gout or lowers the quantity of uric acid within the body.  NSAIDs and Colchicine are used to handle the discomfort and irritation of gout. Probenecid is involved in lowering uric acid by increasing the amount excreted by the technique. Allopurinol and the new gout treatment Febuxostat assists by preventing the development of uric acids.

Febuxostat is an inhibitor of xanthine oxidase.  Xanthine oxidase is the substance that breaks down purine, a gout component.  When Febuxostat blocks the formation of xanthine oxidase, uric acid is reduced significantly.  Xanthine oxidase is required to oxidate hypoxanthine and xanthine to uric acid.  Febuxostat restrains xanthine oxidase therefore losing the creation of uric acid.

Allopurinol is the most common drug used to deal with gout and just like Febuxostat, is also used as an inhibitor for xanthine oxidase.  There is certainly little difference between the two except that research and studies show that Febuxostat had much more significant levels of uric acid decrease compared to Allopurinol.

Febuxostat is a great alternative for individuals who cannot take Allopurinol.  However, if the person whose gout is controlled or treated by Allopurinol and aren't experiencing any serious side effects, then a switch just isn't necessarily in order.

Negative effects of using Febuxostat include diarrhea, headache, and abnormal liver functions.  The rate of cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke, were significantly greater with patients taking Febuxostat compared to those taking Allopurinol.  However it is not clear and there are no solid proof whether or not it was Febuxostat that caused this considerable boost.

Febuxostat uner the brand name Uloric comes in two strengths, 40 mg and 80 mg.  The brand-new gout remedy is taken once a day.  The manufacturer of Uloric recommends that individuals with gout start with the 40 mg strength and eventually increase to the 80 mg after six weeks.  That is, if a higher dose is required.

There is certainly still no real treatment that can completely eliminate gout altogether.  Nevertheless this new gout remedy serves a wonderful purpose of reducing the discomfort and suffering that this disease causes to a lot of people.
